Letter to J.K Rowling

“The stories we love best do live in us forever. So whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.” – JK Rowling

Throughout my life I have encountered numerous books; whether these books were for my pleasure or for learning. They inspired my writing skills and love of literature, folk lore and history.

I found solace in what books and movies gave me. Probably one of the most poignant moments concerning literacy in my life was my discovery of the library, and my awe after I got my taste buds titillated. The relevance is less about the learning aspect of reading, but rather the meaning I associate with reading. To this day I praise you for  your contribution to literature. It may be ridiculous fantasy fiction to some people, but the Harry Potter book franchise helped me so much throughout my childhood. It taught me a fantastical vocabulary, involved me honing in on the ability to deduce, and it was my escape from the pains happening in my personal life.

Today is the 13th of July. I have just watched the last of the official books-turned-movies, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II. Every time I seem to disregard sequels purely based on their records of disappointing, a redeeming sequel seems to contradict the norm.

You had me at Philosophers Stone and then took me on a journey through magical people, foreign lands as well as the creation of mythical creatures and witnessing my astounding shock at rediscovering my imagination. You wrote of a childhood I wished to incorporate with mine. I felt all the torrent emotions and ever-evolving character personalities.

I am writing this whilst sitting on a 17:50 train to Bellville and back to my dreary existence. Coincidentally, you first thought up Harry Potter on a train and I like that symmetry.

The only talent I have ever truly believed I possessed was the ability to write. The likes of JK Rowling, Dan Brown, Oscar Wilde, James Rollins, Nora Roberts, EE Cummings, C.S Lewis and even the Mills & Boon writers, have helped me hone in on my skill. I am able to read thoroughly, think critically and write splendidly.

And as I write the conclusion to this essay/letter and diary entry of sorts, I realize I am saying goodbye to an era-one magical and enchanting one. I remember Ralph Fiennes as he portrayed the infamous Lord Voldemort (Tom Riddle) and am reminded of the extent of people’s capabilities that goes beyond the physical prowess, to the power of knowledge, entertainment, the magic of life and its adventures and the ever-changing world which I hope will never be forgotten. I say goodbye to my childhood because I wouldn’t have made it through the toils of many tribulations, trapped in reality, without the magic JK weaved.

Goodbye!

OMG!!! fanboy shout! haha I looove your letter to JK Rowling, who is, in my opinion the greatest author of all time. So far, wink wink…
You reawakened so much resonance within me, relating to each word & emotion through your experience. Funnily enough the first Harry Potter book I ever read was The Goblet of Fire, as it was the only one left at the library. I’ve been hooked ever since. I remember the EPICness of waiting in line for the release of Order of the Phoenix & every book after. I remember all the costumes people dressed up, the reach of this book was so wide! even in my lenasia south primary school here in johannesburg, a boy came to a bake sale, yes a bake sale with harry potter baked goods like a candy wand, bertie bottes every flavored beans and so on. It was magical and the best part was it wasnt even me who did it!
Harry potter is the greatest literary creation in the history of mankind period. It captured every cell in my imagination & allowed my mind to soar through the skies in reading bliss. Showed me the true uninhibited power an author can possess.
Such is my love for JK & HP, I’ve written many posts in relation to her. Here are some:
