London is never just a backdrop – it’s a living, breathing museum of layered histories, offbeat neighbourhoods, and multicultural verve. And for me, travel accommodation isn’t just a bed between cobbled lane excursions – it’s part of the narrative. I like a room with charm and purpose, where I can linger between my outings, perch window-side to soak up street scenes, and indulge in design details that feel anything but generic.
Enter one of Clerkenwell’s most characterful stays: a converted Georgian townhouse full of antique curios, chilled libations, staff in waistcoats & braces, and an intimate atmosphere that walks the line between eccentric London heritage and curated modern cool.
WELCOME TO ZETTER CLERKENWELL

Eclectic Interiors and Sustainable Design
Three very distinct ways to sum up this hotel’s design?
- Layered interiors
- Storied antiques
- A bohemian experience
Zetter Clerkenwell’s historical character is unmistakable, as each of its 13 period-style rooms & suites is uniquely decorated, blending warm, heritage colour palettes with mismatched antique furnishings. Opposing the clinical conformity of all-white hotel chains, The Zetter Clerkenwell way involves tassled furnishings, four-poster or even canopied beds, and the likes of safari portraits collected from fictional adventures.

Scrub off the day in their marble-clad spaces with freestanding tubs using adequate White Company toiletries, and your playlist coming in clearly through the Bluetooth speakers.
The hotel brand’s commitment to sustainability runs deep – literally.
Water is drawn from a 1 500-ft borehole beneath The Zetter’s third property, Marrable’s Hotel, and guests are gently encouraged to be mindful in their use of towels and water.
It’s a subtle but meaningful nudge that underscores the brand’s eco-conscious ethos without compromising on comfort.
Despite the natural light flooding in from the beautiful and big windows, guests can roll down a blackout curtain and embrace slumber on the hotel’s Hypnos beds topped with soft white sheets and plush & plenty pillows – saving energy like the multitude of technologies throughout the hotel.
When it comes to decor, The Zetter Clerkenwell doesn’t just impress – it intrigues with its patina of lived-in luxury.
From the flower-draped arch haloing its statement turquoise door to the layered, vintage interiors that feel plucked from a writer’s daydream, this townhouse is rich with stories. You’ll find yourself among eccentric portraits, floral upholstered armchairs, velvet cushions, and well-worn couches that have hosted creatives, thinkers, and late-night eccentrics.
Not everyone will be drawn to the way this townhouse is less hotel and more curated salon, however, those who get it will find the kind of place where leaning against a wall, cocktail in hand, can feel like joining an unspoken club.

Culinary Delights at the Cocktail Lounge
Mornings at the hotel are a delightful affair, offering a breakfast experience that balances indulgence with thoughtful sourcing. Served in the hotel’s crescent-shaped dining space, adorned with fuchsia and chartreuse hues & quirky flamingo lampstands, guests can enjoy views of Clerkenwell’s stylish streetscape while breaking their fast with classics complete with Dingley Dell Cumberland sausage and Stornoway black pudding.
Wilhelmina’s Lounge, the hotel’s bar, is a cosy space adorned with patterned armchairs, antique curiosities, and even a little taxidermy. The cocktail menu by Tony Conigliaro – my particular favourite part – pays homage to the area’s distilling heritage, featuring unique concoctions like the interesting Curry Leaf Daiquiri and the refreshing Nettle Gimlet.
While here, guests can also enjoy a selection of small plates (by Bruno Loubet), including truffle sausage rolls and smoked beef brisket croquettes.
Firm lunch offerings include beer-battered cod accompanied by mushy peas, and even dry-aged Hereford rib-eye steak served with seasoned chips. Vegetarians need not despair as options are plenty, such as the artichoke risotto.

Afternoon tea at the Zetter Clerkenwell, though, is an especially whimsical affair. Served in the richly adorned Parlour, guests can indulge in finger sandwiches with inventive fillings, warm scones with clotted cream, and an array of pastries like lavender and blood orange macarons. It’s familiarity with flair!
I say pair your Afternoon tea experience with a speciality cocktail for an extra treat, though there is a glass of English sparkling wine available for your pleasure. The attentive, snazzily dressed staff are always on hand to recommend pairings from the well-curated wine list, and also just on what to choose and savour in both food & beverages.
With roots in the restaurant world, The Zetter Clerkenwell’s owners have a sharp, intuitive grasp of London’s ever-evolving food and drink culture – evident in offerings that are full of flavour yet accessible.
Their menus strike that sweet spot between culinary curiosity & comforting familiarity, welcoming discerning diners without overwhelming the more traditional palate.
VERDICT?
The Zetter Clerkenwell has the air of the private salon of Bridgerton’s Lady Danbury – equal parts decadent and disarming, with occasional live music, velvet corners made for conspiratorial whispers, and the occasional game to keep things interesting.
A rare London find where sun-kissed modernism folds effortlessly into Georgian eccentricity – this is a space where you’ll wake up to wraparound windows, soak in decadent tubs, and sip cocktails where creatives once plotted their next big thing.
Set in one of the capital’s most culturally rich districts, the hotel places you just a short wander from Exmouth Market’s indie delights, the quietly fascinating Museum of the Order of St John, and Farringdon’s dynamic culinary scene (keep an eye out for my St. John’s restaurant review!). A few stops on the Tube or a double-decker away? You’re at the British Museum, West End theatres, Soho’s creative crush, or my favourite museum stop-in: Moco Museum.
But the Zetter isn’t just about what’s around it – it’s about what it offers from within. Whether you’re a Londoner chasing a staycation with soul or a global traveller hunting down more of a stylish, story-filled base, this is a hotel that doesn’t shout. It charms!
More than just an antidote to big-brand blandness, it’s local, lavish in its personality, and – based on my experience – absolutely one for your travel lore!
