City life has its thrills, but burnout is real – even when you’re not working. Sometimes, the cure isn’t in another decently-priced brunch I’m often helpless to resist, nor a beach day – it’s in the wild!
Untamed, unscripted, and idyllically, just far enough from London to feel remote, but close enough to get to without losing a day – this off-grid hideaway wasn’t just a detour. It was the main event.
A full-body exhale in the Welsh hills – easy to see why Matthew McConaughey aligned himself with the brand’s off-grid stays, presently available across Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.
The Oscar-winner partnered with Unyoked to create a purpose-built cabin in the Australian wilderness in 2023, championing the healing power of nature and unplugging. That same ethos pulses through Berwyn!

WELCOME TO UNYOKED BERWYN
Cradled by the folds of rural northeast Wales (reachable with a train & 15-minute Chirk-based taxi), Unyoked’s Berwyn cabin emerges like a verse from an old Welsh ballad – quiet, precise, and impossibly scenic. My walk toward it proved how the cabin is not simply placed in nature, but painted into it – an intentional blend of rugged landscape and minimal design where you’re not watching the view but also part of it.
Unyoked Berwyn is part of a growing global network of eco-luxe cabins designed to help people disconnect meaningfully. This one, not far from the Berwyn mountain range and the Clwydian Way, delivers on the promise of peace and pleasure in a pristine perch.
Set on a working sheep farm, the land ripples with native grasses, the soft bleats of lambs, and when guests arrive: the slow roll of us wheelbarrowing our essentials about 400m from the gate.
Deep breaths. One foot in front of the other. The world quiets. The trees are leaning in.
You’ve entered Unyoked territory – and it’s nothing short of medicine for the soul!
Scandi-Minimalism Meets Wild Wales

The cabin itself is compact, clean-lined, subtly branded on essentials, and fully off-grid. Think Scandi restraint softened by rustic Welsh textures. Everything is made to be easily used and loved: the cabin’s cedar cladding that warms with the sun, the double-glazed windows that frame the misty hills like landscape paintings, and a comfortable, spacious bed that’s cocooned in soft linen and designed for the kind of sleep you forget you’re capable of in the city.
By the time I settled into bed, I was mesmerised by the storybook setting, and fighting the urge to sleep just for one more glimpse.
You won’t find a flat-screen TV or even a flush toilet here; however, indoors, you will find a composting loo that miraculously doesn’t smell (I promise), an easy-to-use gas stovetop for simple cooking, and an Aeropress kit with ethically sourced beans ready for that morning brew.
There’s no clutter, no tech, and no shame in sleeping in.

Unyoked Berwyn’s interiors use blackened steel, timber, and touches of natural fibre to create cosy warmth without clutter. Hooks are where you need them – from the front door/wet corner to the bathroom, and blankets are thick and warm enough to forgo lighting a fire some evenings.
Light comes from demure fixtures, a solar-powered lantern, a candle in an emergency (don’t slumber before putting it out), or the wide open sky itself. It’s my Pinterest cabin dream, minus the DIY mandate!
The Unyoked brand has really nailed the balance between design-minded travel and something more ancient: feeling human again. They’ve turned “unplugged” from a marketing term into a covetable ritual, and Berwyn might just be one of their most successful altars yet.
A getaway co-signed by Mother Nature and scored with wind, woodsmoke, and wandering sheep.
A Day in the Unyoked Life
Unyoked’s cabins, no matter which continent you wander to, follow the same trusted blueprint: stripped-back comfort, nature-embracing design, and just enough structure to let your mind unravel in peace. But what keeps off-grid devotees and curious city escapees booking again and again – sometimes within the same country – is the difference of place: the shapes of the hills, the scent of the air, the lilt of birdsong, and the way the light changes your entire rhythm (Circadian included).
Wake slowly. Watch the sky shift. Brew coffee barefoot – though I recommend investing in a pair of sturdy Veldskoen slippers for chilly winter mornings.
Then, a definite must-do is reading the Unyoked Field Guide – a curated mini-library for your cabin; In my case, it was filled with introductions to Welsh birds, tips toward mindfulness, fire-building instructions, and even constellation spotting.
With a stamp sitting alongside the booklet with journaling space, there’s even a little memorable fun in stamping your Unyoked Field Guide like a passport, and the whispered promise that fulfillment may come with seasonally venturing to the next cabin soon!
Given Unyoked’s brilliant ranking of their cabins by remoteness and challenging walks, perhaps hiking nearby would do you good. I, however, made for the firepit with my glass of spirit – adorable little cans making up part of the welcome kit.
Hungry?

Bring your own provisions for all meals and thirst levels (this is definitely not a room-service kind of place), or immerse yourself in local cuisine by taking advantage of the Meals for the Wild options that Unyoked offers – hearty, ethically sourced pre-packed meals you can cook right on the cabin stove. If you’re lucky and prepared, there’s Welsh cheese and chutney to snack on, and wine stashed in the cooler box.
Unsure of what I was heading towards, I chose the convenience of a London TESCO’s and Waitrose before departing for Chirk in Wales, for my selection of drinks, snacks, breakfast, and other meals.
VERDICT?
What’s wild is that this simple, self-contained Unyoked life doesn’t feel like a downgrade from luxury – it’s a different flavour of it, with the amazing benefit of adhering to a “Leave No Trace” travel ethos!
This isn’t glamping. It’s smarter, quieter, and much more intentional than that – and what an experience it all is!
Unyoked Berwyn is for couples chasing reconnection, solo creatives needing clarity, and high-performance pros who want to stay somewhere still curated, but totally anti-performative. You don’t need to do anything here to justify your trip. The Welsh setting is the experience, complete with:
- Queen-sized bed with premium linens
- Eco-friendly products, refillable items, and minimal packaging
- Solar-powering (you can USB-cable charge your devices, switch lights on, and have a hot shower)
- Gas burner stove, pot, pan, kettle, French press, and the cult-favourite AeroPress coffee maker
- Bar fridge
- Rain-style indoor shower
- x1 pack of Firewood free (available bags in the storage will be charged to the booking card thereafter)
- Low environmental footprint
- Bluetooth speaker
- Writing desk and journal for reflection, sketching, or solitude
- Deck with seating and uninterrupted countryside views
If you’re plotting an unplugged trip to the UK or seeking a mindful moment on your next work sabbatical, book early. Cabins like this are no longer niche – they’re necessary (and consistently booked)!
Just bring your boots, pack your heavy knits, and maybe a bottle of something decent to sip fireside.
