What’s the hype about Pancakes?
Pancakes have only recently made it to my breakfast repertoire.
Lockdown means I’m barred from some of the best breakfast eateries in the world. Waffles, pancakes, french toast crepes etc. were always exclusively treats to be had at restaurants for me – maximising my weekend relaxation, and enjoyment of people-watching while sipping tea.
Since Covid-19 has been running roughshodden over our lives, I’ve tried recreating the magic of dining out, by making poached eggs, a decent fry-up, and some excellent waffles.
Pancakes, especially chocolate chip, seem to require more fan fare though – the relatively recent spark in trendy breakfast playing a significant part (in Cape Town atleast).
Even in New York, I remember pancakes being a treat on many a menu, which hoards would commute to enjoy, during their champagne brunch.
How do you like your pancakes usually?
Straightforward with syrup alone, or a little adventurous with some Ricotta and Blueberries, some lemon zest, and a darn good Parmesan cheese?
I’ve heard stranger pancake breakfast combinations, but I’m just enjoying mine with Nutella this time.

Oh! Did I forget to mention that I didn’t make these particular pancakes?
Yeah, I’m sure I’d love to learn the Gordon Ramsey cooking method for these, but Woolworths food has not done me wrong yet, where breakfast goods are concerned.
These Chocolate Chip pancakes (best served warm), are so soft and fluffy.

They are made with free range eggs, and are dotted with dark chocolate chips.
My pancakes are topped with a spoonful of Nutella, and Haagen Dazs Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream, decadently completed with crunchy biscuit pieces & strawberry sauce.
